This publication is part of the research efforts undertaken by the Center for Rural Studies to document the social and material dimensions of life in Palestine and to highlight the cultural and historical significance of Palestinian folk and built heritage in both villages and cities. Through this book, we open a distinctive research window onto one of the urban spaces that most vividly embodies the everyday interaction between people and place: the hammam, or public bathhouse.

The study of public bathhouses in Palestine, with their rich architectural, social, economic, and health-related dimensions, offers valuable insights into everyday life in urban and traditional settings. It also sheds light on the evolving relationship between people and public space, as well as changing notions of cleanliness, ritual purity, and privacy in Palestinian society—from the early Islamic periods to the dawn of the modern era.

In Palestine’s cultural landscape, it is often the smallest details that provide the key to understanding the larger story. At its heart, the hammam was far more than a place for bathing. It was a vibrant everyday setting where people met, where life and memory intertwined, and where rituals involving the body, the spirit, and the community were performed. In the popular imagination, the hammam was associated not only with its practical function, but also with a broader social and ritual system encompassing weddings, childbirth, circumcision, and healing. It was also shaped by distinct roles assigned to women, men, and those who worked in and around the bathhouse, reflecting wider gender and spatial transformations within the local social fabric.
